Fleur the Passion will return to the North Sea heading for the Wadden Sea in particular. This area has recently been declared "World Heritage Site by the UNESCO".
A project on best practises is planned to complete the information gathered earlier in the expedition. We shall report on the mussel fishery, a tradition of this area which shows, however, alarming signs of overexploitation. Here again the main theme will be the benefits accrued by Marine Protected Areas to the sustainable management of ecosystems, in this case mussel beds.
For this project we will have on board a group of scientists from the IMARES (Institute for Marine Resources & Ecosystem Studies).
We will sail through the Dutch channels to reach Amsterdam for "Sail 2010" (August 19th-23rd), the largest gathering of Tall Ships in the world. Fleur the Passion will moor in the centre of the event. We will organize a multimedia show, talks and conferences to present "The Changing Oceans Expedition" to the public.
