Kieler Woche with students from Bugnon Highschool - Kiel - Germany - June 19 to 27, 2010

A group of swiss students joined the crew of Fleur de Passion during the famous "Kieler Woche". They visited the zoological museum, hosting skeletons of dolphins and whales and a history of discovery expeditions on the oceans. They also visited the Baltic Sea Information Center and the aquarium which is smaller than the ones in St Malo and Brest but giving a good impression of local species of the area. The students received education on sailing and navigation as well as diving (theory only), oceanography and coastal ecology. They took samples and had a presentation with a group of german students, had a taste of night navigation and shifts.

At the end of the week the parade of Tallships united over one hundred units and several hundred spectator boats. Many different boats are on the water for this day of the festival and the numerous races. Classic yachts with square sails, gaff cutters, steamers including some with paddle wheels from the Mississippi, longships and many racing yachts, maxis, trimarans, the Hydroptère and the Planet Solar as well as military and commercial vessels.
In the evening a solid crowd is filling streets and quays and on sunday evening big fireworks close this festive week.

The Kiel Week

The Changing Oceans Expedition began its mission in the Baltic Sea with a socio-educational project. An opportunity for swiss students from Lausanne to do fieldwork in marine biology while also getting an introduction to life at sea onboard Fleur de Passion.
